Martin Surfacing to Beynon Enterprises: Evolution of A Leader

It started in April of 1974, when John T. Beynon and James E. Spitznas founded Martin Surfacing, Inc. as a designer, manufacturer, and installer of Polyurethane athletic surfacing for fieldhouses, gymnasiums, and indoor and outdoor running tracks. The Martin Surfacing team brought on Thomas Medved, the lead research chemist that created such brand name Polyurethane products as Tartan by 3M, Proturf by Professional Products, Inc., and Unirite by American Biltrate. Together, Beynon and Medved designed and formulated renowned products like Versaturf, as well as such celebrated sports surfaces as the Dual-Durometer ISS 1000 and ISS 2000.

For 26 years, Beynon owned and grew Martin Surfacing, Inc. into the largest manufacturer and installer of Polyurethane athletic surfacing in the United States. Martin Surfacing, Inc. was known as the leading supplier of premier collegiate running tracks, completing such prestigious venues as the 1990 and 1998 Goodwill Games, the 1992 U.S. Olympic Trials, the NCAA Championships for 1993, 1996 and 2002, the 1994 Commonwealth Games, and the Big 10, ACC, Pac10 and SEC Championships.

In 1998, Beynon merged Martin Surfacing, Inc. with DessoDLW, their artificial turf supplier. These entities were then sold to SRI, Inc. in June 1999.

In 2001, Beynon founded Beynon Sports Surfaces, Inc. (BSS) to provide state-of-the-art Polyurethane surfacing systems to the athletic surfacing industry. He brought together a team of the most experienced individuals in the industry, from installation experts to research and development innovators, to emerge as the leading provider of premier Polyurethane athletic surfacing for outdoor/indoor running tracks, fieldhouses, and Olympic Caliber running tracks in the U.S. today.

Most recently, Beynon Enterprises, Inc. (BEI) was founded to supply IAAF Certified Polyurethane track and field surfacing systems to qualified applicators throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Southeast Asia. BEIs approved applicators are the most experienced contractors in their region of the U.S. with full time support from BEI and BSS.
